Wireless Networking with Wireless Controllers Track: Mobility, Wireless and Networking

Wednesday 11:15 AM

Wireless networks based on the 802.11 standards have become commonplace. We find wireless hot spots now at hotels, airports, and the local Starbucks. We are likely to have a wireless network in our home. So why is it that so many companies in our area have been slow to scale up their wireless deployments? While a few I/T departments are still concerned about wireless security, the answer for some I/T departments is that they are reluctant to take on the management of multiple standalone wireless access points. Enter the wireless controller (or wireless switch). The wireless controller vendors tell us that their products will reduce the amount of effort required to deploy and manage an extensive wireless network. Is this true or is this just vendor hype? This presentation will provide an introduction to wireless controllers and lightweight access points, along with an overview of the functionality I/T staffs can expect when they deploy them. We will discuss the installation experience, available security options, integration with the wired network, and management capabilities. The presentation will conclude with a case study covering a recent wireless controller deployment at one of FLG Networking's clients.
